Mystery Edwin Drood
Charles Dickens Novel As The Reflection Of The Social Change In British Victorian Period
Charles Dickens was a famous writer when he was alive and he is now one of the best-known and most widely read of English writers. Dickens wrote from comedy to social criticism and from history to journalism. The history of Dickens’s life that made him wrote many novels about social life and criticized of Victorian. His poor head for finances in his childhood be an inspiration for him to wrote about the lower classes and the criticized for government who did not care with people. Dickens wrote about religion and fiction. Dickens spent much time to traveling and campaigning against many of the social evils of his time. He was very concern with the problems of the society change in that time.
Charles Dickens wrote thirteen novels between Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, published in the year of his death, 1870. In Oliver Twist (1837-8) and Nicholas Nickleby (1838-9), he wrote of the social problem of young boy named Oliver. Oliver had bad treatment in an institution for the poor and working for criminals. Here, Dickens wanted education for all children, and shown his readers the kind of problems children had in the cities, where poor people had no chance to share in the success of the nation. He often tells the stories of victims, and made his reader aware of the problem of Victorian society.
Moreover, Dickens tried to write novels, which criticized society in a more general way. David Copperfield (1849-50) was his most positive novel about growing up. The hero, David, became the kind of success, which Victorian admired- he is rich, he marries, and a general sense of happy ending is given. This novel was based in part of his childhood and his success. However, when he came to write another partly autobiographical story, Great Expectations (1860-1), there is a sense that the ending will not be so happy: there is a feeling of disappointment, that hopes will not be met, and that the earlier ideals have been false. Then in Hard Times (1854), Dickens shows the worst sides of the new industrial society of the Mindlands of England and most clearly shows how the poor lived.. Industry is contrasted with the freedom of the individual and the whole novel presents a very pessimistic picture of the nation. In addition, in A Christmas Carol, it shows the traditional picture of Victorian family values, and helped to create the image of Christmas as the most important family festival.
