Wildlife Volunteering Africa - What Are "The Big 5"?

Anyone interested in wildlife volunteering must consider Africa as the number one destination and will soon come across the phrase "The big five". But what exactly are they and what made them top of the list?

Well it seems the phrase was originally used by big game hunters. It was given to what were considered to be the five most difficult and dangerous game to hunt on foot. The ultimate challenge. These days, fortunately, it's more often the wildlife volunteer organizations, photographers and people on safari who go in search of these animals.

But which are they? Can you guess?

First, the lion. No surprises there. Although the African lion would rather stay out of your way it's going to be a formidable opponent if you're in its territory. These days we're more concerned with observation, conservation and rehabilitation but for many wildlife volunteers it remains top of the list. The one everyone wants to work with.

Second, the elephant. Not surprising either. A little on the large size! Third is the Cape Buffalo, commonly called a Water Buffalo. Although a grazing animal, it can be a fast and fearsome beast, often capable of defending itself and its calf against lion attack and even crocodiles. Rather than the lion or elephant it is allegedly the Cape Buffalo that is responsible for most hunter deaths (should it get some kind of award?).

Fourth is the Leopard, partly because of its mainly nocturnal habits. It's tough to hunt something that's only out and about while you're sleeping!

Last, but certainly not least is the Black Rhino. Few people need More Than a glance to realize why! A couple of tons, armor plated hide, horned and capable of remarkable acceleration and speed over short distances, it's not surprising that even in powerful 4 x 4 safari vehicles these animals are given a wide berth!

So there you have it, "The Big 5". Now the top targets of the wildlife volunteer and in need of our protection not our predation. These magnificent creatures still exist today but, without on-going help, who knows for how much longer?
